Dr Fong is a Senior Consultant General Surgeon in Tan Tock Seng Hospital with a subspecialty interest in Colorectal Surgery.

He strongly believes in the benefit and superiority of advanced minimally invasive (MIS) techniques in the treatment of rectal cancer for improved patient outcome. His MIS expertise includes conventional laparoscopic (key hole) surgery, robotic surgery and advanced transanal endoscopic techniques. He is one of a handful of surgeons in Singapore proficient in the transanal technique in rectal cancer resection (trans-anal total mesorectal excision (taTME)) and recognized as proficient (by Intuitive, manufacturer of the DaVinci robot) in the use of the robot for colorectal surgery. He also has an interest in surgery for inflammatory bowel disease and for locally advanced and recurrent pelvic cancer. He performs emergency colonic stenting for the treatment of large bowel obstruction.

Dr Fong has a deep interest in quality improvement, and is a key member and clinical champion of multiple initiatives to improve the delivery of care for colorectal surgery in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. This includes the United States Geisinger based “Better Colectomy” project, the “Better Colonoscopy” project and the Tan Tock Seng Hospital ERAS (early recovery after surgery) initiative. Tan Tock Seng Hospital is a center of excellence (CoE) for the international ERAS society.

Dr Fong graduated from the National University of Singapore Faculty of Medicine in 2001, received his postgraduate masters of medicine degree in 2007, exited as a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and entered into the register of specialists in Singapore, in 2011. He has since completed a fellowship program under the Ministry of Health hospital manpower development program (HMDP), for the treatment of advanced and recurrent colorectal cancer under Professor Peter Sagar in Leeds United Kingdom.

He holds multiple positions both within and outside of Tan Tock Seng hospital. He was elected as the honorary secretary of the Society of Colorectal Surgeons (Singapore)(SCRS) in 2015 for a term of 2 years. In Tan Tock Seng Hospital, he is the deputy director of the endoscopy centre, core clinical faculty in the surgical residency program, core clinical faculty in the urology residency program, senior clinical lecturer for Yong Loo Lin School of medicine (National University of Singapore) and clinical lecturer for Lee Khong Chian School of medicine (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore).

He contributes to surgical research with multiple authorships in international and regional publications, and has spoken on his surgical experience at several international conferences. His expertise in minimally invasive colorectal surgery has been recognized by invitations to proctor specialists in learning robotic colorectal surgery and transanal rectal cancer excision in both regional and local institutions. He has won best video awards for demonstrating minimally invasive colorectal surgery in 2012, 2015 and 2016 locally.

Dr Fong currently resides in Pasir Ris with his loving wife, Eberta, and two children, Shiying and Xukai. He is an amateur chess player and loves long relaxing runs by the beach.
